Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool

These late 1940’s/early 1950’s Miles Davis sessions heralded new possibilities in the making of and creation of jazz, the Sound of Cool. Gathering together a nine-piece band, including such future legends as Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan and Max Roach, and working for the first time with Gil Evans, the man with whom he’d later produce some his greatest music ever, this disc, though in some ways a one-off, hints at some aspects of “cool” that Miles would explore in the coming decades. The 12 essential tracks on this set include “Jeru,” “Move,” and “Moon Dreams.” Total Time: 35 minutes
