George Shearing: That Shearing Sound

Pianist George Shearing and his special, uniquely constructed quintet were among the jazz world’s most popular and best-selling units of the 1950’s-60’s. This album, with entirely different personnel, revived that unit’s sound when originally issued in 1994 after a lengthy hiatus. The music, most of which is appealingly charming, velvety and comforting but always notably jazz-oriented, is a well-balanced showcase of jazz standards and American Songbook material, exceedingly well-played and presented. The 13 tracks include “Lullaby of Birdland” and “Autumn Serenade.” Total Time: 65 minutes
