Art Blakey: MoaninÍ

Drummer Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers birthed as many if not more band leaders than any other jazz unit in history. It was also, and always, a potent, powerhouse performing unit. This 1958 release showcases one of Blakey’s best-ever bands. Opening with the pianist Bobby Timmon’s soul-jazz classic “Moanin”, the band continues to fire on all cylinders until the album’s concluding standard. Much of what was great about hard bop jazz then and into the future can be heard here. Total Time: 50 minutes
